FLOWERING BEAUTY: CHERRIES IN 4 SEASONS
Nineteen top artists from Northern California have been painting the cherry orchards in and around Lodi, California, throughout 2006. Their work captures the beauty of the Valley’s agriculture, from winter through fall. The paintings will be featured at the Knowlton Gallery, during the months of March and April, in a show entitled, Flowering Beauty: Cherries in 4 Seasons. The public is invited to an opening reception and wine tasting, Friday, March 2, from 6 – 8:30pm, with wines by Boitano Family Wines and Peirano Estate Winery.
Artists worked in pastel, oil, acrylic, watercolor and photography. They concentrated on three family-owned farms in the Lodi area: the Costa’s, the Miller’s, and the Cortopassi’s. Felix and Lola Costa have farmed at the same location, on the southern border of Lodi, for 50 years, and are typical of many of the hard working family farmers in the San Joaquin Valley. This was truly a magical experience for the artists.
“Painting the cherry orchards in Lodi has been a rich and varied experience: bundling up to catch the February sun through twisted bare branches, dodging springtime storms to capture the explosion of white, and working quickly as the harvesters darted among shady branches on a hot summer morning. Getting to know the people of Lodi and feeling their welcoming warmth has made it memorable.” - Marilyn Rose, artist
Artists for this show include: Chella (Modesto), Rowland Cheney (Clements), Gil Dellinger (Morada), Kathleen Dunphy (Angels Camp), Marilyn Eger (Acampo), Barbara Flaherty (Stockton), Dan Kasser (Morada), Lucinda Kasser (Morada), Robin Gay McCline (Fresno), Clark Mitchell (Cotati), Peggi Kroll-Roberts (Sonora), Ray Roberts (Sonora), Kent Rogerson (Stockton), Marilyn Rose (Nevada City), Juan Peña (Colfax), Nancy Holl-Smith (Lodi), Jeannie Vodden (Mokelumne Hill), Charles Waldman (Columbia), and Marika Wolfe (Stockton).
A book featuring all the cherry show paintings will be available at the Knowlton Gallery. The Gallery is located in the heart of Lodi’s historic downtown, at 115 S. School Street #14.
